Chamber Corner: Summer Break, June Events and Benefits

As I’m typing this the kids are finishing their last day of school and summer break has begun. I remember the excitement of the last day of school as a kid and looking forward to no school for the next three months. It’s also a break for the teachers who have worked hard all school year teaching our kids a variety of subjects. We should be thankful for the wonderful staff of teachers we have at Bureau Valley North and the entire school district. If you see a teacher this summer tell them job well done.

It’s hard to believe we are entering June already, almost halfway through 2017. There is a lot going on in Walnut in the month of June. There really is something to do every weekend. Here’s a quick rundown:

Working on Walnut is hosting two events, a Little Free Library unveiling on Sunday, June 11th and the Townwide Meeting on Monday, June 12th. One thing to note about the Town Meeting. Don’t think of it as just another meeting to attend. Sure there will be some speakers and presentations, but this will be a fun event. Let’s celebrate what Walnut has to offer and hear what our future vision for the community is.

There are three benefits for Walnut citizens in June. Green River Country Club will host one for Keegan Carlson on Friday, June 16th from 6-10 p.m. There will be a Ride or Drive Benefit Run for Brenda Helms on Saturday, June 17th from 11:30 a.m.-6 p.m. out of Manlius. On Saturday, June 24th a Benefit will be held for Tammy Monier at Walnut Park District from Noon-6 p.m. Please support these individuals and their families.

Finally, the month ends with our Annual Walnut Days Celebration, June 30th-July 2nd. This is an exciting year for the Celebration as a lot of new volunteers have stepped up and new events have been added. Please take a look at the Calendar of Events that will be out around town soon or keep track on Social Media for the latest updates. Registration for the 5K for ALS, 3-on-3 Tournament, and Parade are all out now.

I’ll end with this thought. If you drove down Main Street the past several weeks you may have noticed three different construction companies working on a current business and new businesses. It’s easy to get negative about the condition of our Main Street and deteriorating buildings. But, positive things are happening. Stay tuned and don’t forget to shop Walnut.
