These early morning temps certainly tell the story of our next approaching season. Not many leaves falling yet, but with the lawn mowing slowing down and the Summer flowers and gardens going away, it is truly a sign of Fall coming to the Midwest. Perhaps our biggest sign is the harvest of crop. A week ago very little going on, this past week, the Combines, trucks and wagons all found their way out of the storage sheds. As I am fortunate enough to be a part of the harvest, it is easy to see that these giant machines and grain heads take a lot of room on the road. I ask for everyone’s safety sake, slow down when approaching these machines. Be patient when following the tractors and combines, as they go much slower than your car. Be very careful trying to pass, safety to all is most important.
As we talk about Fall and Harvest, I believe some of the first Fall Festivals were created to celebrate a bountiful and successful Harvest. We are certainly in the process of have a bountiful crop, and harvest is in full swing. Unless you have been under a rock somewhere, you will know that Walnut will have its fall festival this coming Saturday October 8th. There is an article on the front page of the Leader this week, and here is the planned schedule for the day;
1:00 – 3:00 PM - Walnut Fire Department Open House.
2:00 – 4:00 PM - Live Music Ron Eckberg Band
2:00 – 6:00 PM - Kids activities ( Hay rides, Face painting, Pumpkin Painting, Games )
2:00 – 6:00 PM - Vendor Fair

6:30 – 7:00 PM - Announcement of Scarecrow Winners
7:00 – 9:00 PM - Family Bingo at Walnut Community building

As you can see, there is a full day of events for all ages. There will be the kickoff for the 50/50, and there will be Craft beer available for sale as well later in the afternoon. This entire event is built around family participation, as well as promotion for progress in Walnut. I believe Brent and all of his committees have made a good plan to succeed in doing this. Good Job people, let’s all be in Walnut this coming weekend for the Fall Fest on Main.
So, if that is not enough entertainment as well as crowds coming to town, the Bi-Annual Antique Picking show is coming the following weekend October 14 and 15. This event brings pickers and people from all over the Midwest. As usual, the event is held at the John Bolz farm, on the North East edge of Walnut. Kevin Larkey and a host of Antique farmers will be your hosts. This is a fun event, that certainly showcases how Agriculture has changed from today to yesterday. More next week, mark your calendar to attend.
One last thing. There is another event this Saturday as well. The Village will be holding an open house at the new Waste Water treatment plant. The tours will begin at 11 AM and last till 2 PM. Two things about this open house. First, YOUR dollars at work. Go see how your money is being spent. We all have the propensity to sit and complain. That’s stupid. Go out to the South side of Walnut, and see this state of the art water treatment facility. This has been a multiyear project, that is now complete. 2nd, what the village has done with building this new plant, is to assure people that Walnut is growing and has a plan for sustaining growth. Water treatment plant, not very glamorous, but very much a part of a successful community. Many other opportunities for improvement in town, this is just an example of one completed. Lets keep them coming, good job people.
That’s it for this week, go to Festival this weekend. Spend Saturday afternoon with a brat and a beer, and a little Rock and Roll music from Ron Eckberg and his boys. Sitting on top of a Walnut Fire truck doing an inspection, while getting ready to go get your face painted. Then thinking all afternoon about that winning card at Bingo that night. Does not get much better people. Gotta love Walnut. Thanks for all of your efforts.
